What really matters most to you? What do you value? In many ways, your values are what define you; they speak to your true nature. As Belle discusses in this week’s episode of the Step Into Me podcast, how you act, the decisions and choices you make, are all founded on what you value most.
If you have ever felt uneasy or uncomfortable in a situation or relationship, there’s a good chance one of your core values was violated.
Knowing what makes you tick is an incredibly powerful tool to have in your self-protection kit. When making decisions, you may ask, does this align with my values? When you’re feeling angry or frustrated or out of sorts, you may ask, which of my values is being violated?
What Makes You Tick?
At the end of this section, you’ll find a list of common values. As you read through the values, make a note of the ones that matter most. You may find you have different values for different areas of your life. Feel free to write a few lists on separate sheets of paper: What are my personal values? What do I value in relationships? What do I value in the workplace? And so on.
Once you have compiled your lists, look at each value and ask yourself: What does this value give me? Write your answer next to each value. And then ask the same question of your answer, what does (value) give me? Keep asking that same question until you can’t go any further. The final response will reveal your “core” value.
In some instances, you may find your surface values drill down to the same core values. While “trustworthiness” and “love” may be values you consider important in a relationship, you may discover that underlying both are “safety and security”. If a relationship doesn’t make you feel safe or secure, you may find yourself struggling on the inside.
Values matter! So, what really matters most to you? Take a look at the list below and see which ones strike a chord.
